Pokémon The Game I Never Played But Loved Anyway

How Watching Someone Else Play Pokémon Became My Ultimate Gaming Thrill
The Shocking Truth About My Game of the Year
December 26, 2022 — Here’s a confession: My Game of the Year isn’t Elden Ring. Shocking, right? While Elden Ring was amazing, the real joy came from something I’ve never played: Pokémon. Yes, you heard that right. Pokémon Legends Arceus and Scarlet brought me more happiness than any game I’ve actually played this year.
The Pokémon Paradox
I’ve tried Pokémon games, but they never really clicked with me. I’ve never finished one. But my fiancé Rune (yes, they’re non-binary) is a Pokémon fanatic. Sun & Moon were the first releases after we got together, and I’ve been buying every new Pokémon game since. Even during tough times, it’s worth every penny.
The Joy of Watching
There’s something magical about watching someone else play a game they love. Rune’s delight as they discover new Pokémon or evolve their favorites is infectious. I help with the starter selection and contribute to the names. (As a games journo, I’m pretty good at puns.) Making them laugh is the best part.
The Switch Advantage

I love that mainline Pokémon games are now on the Switch. Instead of peering over their shoulder at a handheld screen, we snuggle up on the sofa. It’s become a whole event—complete with snacks. I might not watch the entire game, but I’m always there for the big moments.
The Unexpected Appeal of Fandom
Watching Pokémon has helped me appreciate parts of gaming and fandom I never understood before. I’ve realized that the game itself isn’t the point—it’s seeing someone else enjoy themselves. I’ve even started to enjoy fan art and the buzz around new releases.
The Casual Fan in Me

I’ve never been a casual fan of anything. I either love it or I don’t. But with Pokémon, I’m content to enjoy the news and rumors, smile at fan art, and have a growing list of favorite Pokémon (with Bulbasaur always at the top). It’s nice—and cheaper than my usual all-in approach.
The Best Bits Without Playing
I’ve realized that some of the best parts of games can be enjoyed without playing them at all. Last year, Unpacking was my GOTY, and I experienced it entirely through watching Rune play. It was even more enjoyable than if I had played it myself.

The Power of Shared Experiences
Playing games with someone else can be even better than playing alone. I wish I had played Immortality with someone to share the moments. Tunic, another great game from 2022, would have been so much better with a partner—especially for those frustrating combat sections.
The Pokémon Phenomenon
Pokémon has a unique ability to bring joy and excitement, even to those who don’t play. It’s a game that transcends the screen and becomes a shared experience. It’s not just about catching ’em all—it’s about the journey and the moments you share.
The Ultimate Question
What’s your favorite game that you’ve never played? Share your stories in the comments. Maybe there’s a game out there that you’ve been missing out on, just like I did with Pokémon.
